Revolutionary: Organic solar cells for steel roof

IIT Kanpur develops solar steel panels that is more efficient than available panels

Indian researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur have developed organic solar cells on steel substrates that can convert a steel roof into an energy-producing device more efficient than the ones currently available in the market.

The research by Prof. Ashish Garg demonstrated the integration of multi-layered electrodes of configuration MoO3/Au/MoO3 with organic solar cells.

“These electrodes offer higher optical transmission as compared to only metallic electrodes. The devices with multilayer electrodes showed a clear improvement in the photovoltaic performance by 1.5 times, as compared with those obtained with single-layer top metal electrodes of gold”, said a statement by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The promising development could not only reduce dependency on China for import of solar panels, but also could boost demand for steel, of which India is a top producer, besides aiding solar power significantly across India and the world.
