New nuclear plant in Haryana; first in northern India

Likely to kickstart the nuclear ecosystem in northern India and meet the energy requirements of the region

Minister of State Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, said northern India’s first nuclear plant will be built in Gorakhpur, Haryana, about 150 km north of New Delhi.

Most of India’s have been in the southern part of India. The one in Haryana is likely to kickstart the nuclear ecosystem in northern India and meet the energy requirements of the region.

“One of the major achievements under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership would be the installation of Atomic Energy plants in other parts of the country which were earlier confined mostly to the South Indian States or in the west,” said Singh.

The Modi Government has given a bulk approval of installation of 10 nuclear reactors, he added.

Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana’s(GHAVP) having two units of 700 MWe capacity each of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) indigenous design is under implementation. Till date, Rs.4,906 crore has been spent out of total allocated funds of Rs.20,594 crore (total financial progress is 23.8% as on date).

India’s target is to have nuclear power capacity of 22,480 MW by 2031, from around 6,780 MW at present.
