There are high hopes of drastic changes in Indian hockey

Dr. Dilip Tirkey has been elected unopposed as President, Hockey India, in the election held by Hockey India and monitored by the FIH (International Hockey Federation) (read Dilip Tirkey files for President, Hockey India – MDDTimes).

Soon, Tirkey said it will be his goal to take Indian hockey to new heights. Indian hockey has a glorious past, with Olympic golds until 1956 and then again in 1964 and 1980. However, the national sport of India faded since then, partly owing to the introduction of turf/speed hockey when the art of dribbling took the back seat.

Tirkey has said in the past that providing turf fields at the local level will tremendously boost Indian hockey. Moreover, his challenge will be to popularise the sport in several other states of India – currently, it is popular in only pockets in eastern and northern India, though players with great talent have emerged from all parts of the country.

Dilip Tirkey, who is known as one of the best defenders in the world, was the first from Odisha to be the captain of the Indian hockey team.
