A senior advocate prior to becoming the Governor of West Bengal, Dhankar is known for his tiffs with Mamata Banerjee
Jagdeep Dhankar, former advocate in the Supreme Court and Governor of West Bengal, has been elected as the 14th Vice President of India.
Dhankar, who studied in a Sainik School in Rajasthan, was nominated for the post by the BJP-led NDA and defeated the Opposition’s Margaret Alva. He made attempts to highlight the post-poll violence in West Bengal in the recent state elections.

According to the Returning Officer, 725 MPs cast their votes, while 15 votes were invalid. Dhankar won 528 votes against Alva’s 182. Alva seemed shocked by the huge margin of defeat and hinted at cross-voting by several parties/MPs.
The Prime Minister and several other ministers and parties have congratulated Dhankar.
PM Modi said, “Congratulations to Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji on being elected India’s Vice President with resounding support across party lines. I am confident he will be an outstanding Vice President. Our nation will gain tremendously from his intellect and wisdom.”
Dhankar is likely to take office on 11 August 2022.
