India to enter space tourism and beyond

The Minister of State, Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh, told the Parliament yesterday that India has started the process towards developing indigenous capabilities in space tourism. This will be through the demonstration of human space flight capability to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Besides space tourism, this could also augment India’s defence capabilities significantly.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) is also looking to promote active participation of the private sector in space activities, including space tourism.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has launched satellites for several countries in the past. Dr Singh said, ISRO is pursuing international cooperation and relations with 61 countries in different domains of space activities.

He added, “Further, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre [IN-SPACe] has been created as a single-window agency, under Department of Space, to promote, handhold and authorize the activities of private sector in space domain, including those by young entrepreneurs and students interested in the field of Space Science”.

The Department of Space (DOS) is also in the process of drafting a comprehensive, integrated Space Policy.
