FTII TV Wing Student Film to compete in Cannes 2024
Kannada short film ‘Sunflowers Were First Ones To Know’ is the only Indian film to be selected by Cannes this year
(FTII) Film and Television Institute of India’s TV wing student, Chidanand S Naik’s short film, “SUNFLOWERS WERE FIRST ONES TO KNOW”, has been selected among 18 shorts from across the world in the “La Cinef” Competitive section of 77th Cannes Film Festival, France. This particular section of Cannes focuses on encouraging new talent from film institutes.
This year, Cannes received 2,263 films from institutes across the world. Of those, 18 have been shortlisted for screening, including 14 live-action and four animated films.
While the diploma students hog all the spotlight at FTII (often for wrong reasons such as drugs, violence and strikes), this is the first time a student film from the one-year Television course has been selected at Cannes. Further, the film is likely to showcase local talent and storytelling of the underrated Kannada industry, and promote rural Karnataka on the world stage.
The director Chidananda Naik wrote, “I can hardly believe I will be sharing a Kannada film with audiences at one of the world’s most prestigious film festival. It is a dream come true.”
The 77th Cannes Film Festival will be held during 15-24 May 2024. Prizes will be awarded on 23 May.
