Air forces from several countries, including India, the US and Japan are participating in a large military day and night drill in the host nation Australia. Exercise Pitch Black is taking place this year during 19 August – 8 September 2022.

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) said Exercise Pitch Black 2022 is its most significant International Engagement activity with forces participating from several allied nations that will develop and enhance military relationships at all levels.

“Exercises such as this are pivotal to ensuring Air Force remains ready to respond whenever the Australian Government requires. The training and integration of forces that occurs during this exercise directly supports Air Force’s ability to conduct operations,” RAAF said.

This year, the exercise will host up to 2,500 personnel and up to 100 aircraft from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, UAE, US and UK. Germany, Japan, and the Republic of Korea will be participating fully for the first time.

Amid the rising China threat, the RAAF said that activities such as Exercise Pitch Black recognise Australia’s strong relationships and the high value on regional security and fostering closer ties throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

Around 100 sophisticated aircraft from different countries will participate in the exercise. An Indian Air Force contingent is also participating, led by Group Captain YPS Negi. It comprises over 100 personnel, four Su-30 MKI fighters and two C-17 aircraft.

This has irked China again, and its state-run newspaper Global Times said, “It may add oil to the flames as the Asia-Pacific region is experiencing instability with the US’ rampant provocations in the region.”
