Droupadi Murmu to be 15th President of India
Murmu’s tenure will be tested in light of the rising uncertainty across the world and restlessness within India
Former Governor of Jharkhand, Droupadi Murmu will be India’s 15th President, the counting of votes indicated today.
The ruling NDA, led by the BJP, had nominated Murmu as the next President (read NDA nominates Droupadi Murmu as next President – MDDTimes). The tenure of the current President, Ram Nath Kovind, ends on 24 July.
Murmu’s tenure will be tested in light of the rising uncertainty across the world and restlessness within India. The world order is likely to change in the next five years as well.
Coming from a humble background, Murmu hails from the Mayurbhanj district of northern part of south-eastern state of Odisha. Mayurbhanj is known for its rich tribal culture and heritage, and people there burst in joy upon hearing the invincible lead that Murmu held today during the counting of the votes, which also indicated some cross voting in favour of Murmu.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I would like to thank all those MPs and MLAs across party lines who have supported the candidature of Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji. Her record victory augurs well for our democracy.”
The Opposition’s nominated Yashwant Sinha congratulated Murmu. He wrote, “India hopes that as the 15th President of the Republic, she functions as the Custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour.”
The Congress party said, “Congratulations to Smt. Droupadi Murmu on being elected the President of India. Best wishes for future endeavours.”
The President of India is the Head of State and the Commander-in-Chief of the defence forces.
