Monsoon activity favourable for kharif sowing in India

A cyclonic circulation has caused rains consistently across most parts of India in the past few days, and rainfall is likely over another two days.

According to observations by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), active monsoon conditions over central India and along the west coast are likely to continue over the next five days and increase of rainfall over Northwest India during 9-10 July 2022.

There was extremely heavy rainfall or heavy to very heavy rainfall in most parts of India. A cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Rajasthan. However, though the monsoon trough is active it is south of its normal position, said IMD.

A cyclonic circulation also lies over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts tilting south-westwards.

Fairly widespread/widespread rainfall and thunderstorm/lightning with isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala & Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana and Karnataka over the next five days.

Rainfall is also likely in northern India, including Punjab and Haryana.

Farmers expressed their pleasure at the rainfall given it has been consistent but not very heavy to damage the newly planted crops, especially rice. In India, about 60-65% farmland is dependent on rainfall.
