PM Modi launches National Logistics Policy
Aims to reduce logistics costs and time quickly
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Logistics Policy (NLP) today. The main aim of the new policy is to reduce both time and costs.
Modis said, “National Logistics Policy has not come out of the blue and there are 8 years of hard work behind it. There are policy changes, major decisions, and, if I talk about myself, it has my 22 years of governance experience behind it.”
Several schemes like Sagarmala, Bharatmala, Dedicated Freight Corridors come under logistics along with government attempts to connect to ports in Bangladesh.
Modi said, “From 13-14% logistics cost [of GDP], we should all aim to bring it to single-digit as soon as possible. This, in a way, is a low-hanging fruit, if we have to become globally competitive.”
The Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) is expected to bring all the digital services related to the transportation sector into a single portal, which should help exporters. There is also a mechanism to register complaints online.
Earlier this year, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal had said India’s logistics cost could decline to 7-8% of GDP, one of the lowest in the world in future.
