In action in August 1946

Some call him a goon, an extremist, but the contribution of Gopal Chandra Mukhopadhyay in avoiding the merger of Kolkata and most parts of West Bengal with East Pakistan (Bangladesh) cannot be overlooked. His retaliation during the Direct Action announced by Jinnah not only saved lives of Hindus, it stopped violence by the Islamists who wanted to snatch Kolkata.

Defying the tide, later, when Gandhi urged people to surrender their arms, Gopal Chandra said he was proud of the arms that protected his sisters, why should he surrender them?
