Time for masks and distancing again

After a few months of low incidents, COVID-19 cases are rising menacingly again, with 16,135 cases identified in the last 24 hours vs around 10,000 a few weeks ago (read COVID-19 vaccines alarmingly low – MDDTimes).

This is especially alarming because the weekly positivity rate now stands at 3.74% (daily positivity at 4.85%) vs below 0.5% in the start of April 2022.

India’s active caseload currently stands at 1,13,864 and now constitute 0.26% of the country’s total positive cases.

However, the sharp rise in new cases have given rise to concerns about any new mutant that may be spreading faster than assumed across India. Further, China saw large lockdowns in the recent months, which is a major risk, given the spread globally takes place after a few months of lag following a surge in China.

The government said in a statement that India’s recovery rate stands at 98.53%, and 13,958 patients recovered in the past 24 hours.

It also mentioned that more than 193.53 crore (1,93,53,58,865) vaccine doses have been provided to the states/UTs so far. More than 11.18 crore (11,18,91,910) balance and unutilized COVID vaccine doses are still available with the states/UTs to be administered.
