Will build 75 textile hubs like Tiruppur: Piyush Goyal
The textiles minister made this ambitious claim during an exporters’ meet in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. He also said India could become a $30 trillion economy in 30 years
Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Textiles, Commerce & Industry and Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, said the government “wants to create” 75 textile hubs like Tiruppur, during an exporters meet in the city, in western Tamil Nadu last week. He did not mention any timeframe though.
According to the government, the Tiruppur textile hub produces textiles worth Rs.30,000 crore every year, and provides direct employment to six lakhs and indirect employment to four lakhs. Tiruppur used to export Rs.15 crore worth of textile products in 1985. In the year ended March 2022, the estimated exports from Tiruppur are Rs.30,000 crore.
Textiles is the second largest occupation of Indians, after agriculture, engaging around 3.5-4 crore people across India. The total industry size is about Rs.10 lakh crores, and export is about Rs.3.5 lakh crores. Goyal said, the textile sector has the potential to grow to Rs.20 lakh crore industry in the next five years with exports of Rs.10 lakh crore.
Regarding Tiruppur, he said the government will work with Health Ministry on the Sanitary Napkin Machinery in SITRA to provide low-cost sanitary napkins under the PM Jan Aushadhi Yojana.
He also mentioned that India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and could become a $30 trillion economy in 30 years. He said, “If India grows at 8% every year on a Compounded Annual Growth basis, the economy will double in about nine years to be a $6.5 trillion economy. Similarly, in 18 years from now, India could be a $13 trillion economy…hence after 30 years, it can be confidently put that India will be a $30 trillion economy.
