EVs are the future, and could save a significant amount of foreign reserves by cutting imports of oil

The Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) published standards for lithium-ion traction battery packs and systems for electric vehicles in India.

National Standard Body of India stated that the standard IS 17855: 2022 for these battery packs and systems is harmonized with ISO 12405-4: 2018.

One of the major concerns amid growing popularity of EVs in India has been the safety of battery packs. Several instances of EVs catching fire have circulated in the media and there are concerns of impact of water during the rains and floods that are common in many parts of the country.

According to BIS, the new standards have been formulated considering real-life scenarios, such as when the vehicle is parked (battery not in use for a long time), battery system being shipped (stored), operating battery at low and high temperatures, etc. It said, accordingly various tests have been incorporated in this standard.

“This standard incorporates the test procedure for basic characteristic of performance, reliability and electrical functionality for the battery packs and system for either high power or high energy application,” said a government statement. “Most of the EVs use Lithium-ion batteries because of its high power to weight ratio” it added.

The BIS is working on publishing two more standards for various passenger and goods carrying EVS.
